It was just 12 sessions, but you get so invested. It reminded me why I do what I do.
When I was younger, I used to think, I’m just a drop in the ocean, what can I do to change anything? You just get so angry because you feel there’s nothing you can do.
A friend of mine told me a story about a boy on a beach who was upset so many starfish were dying out of the water, he left the beach. He later came back and decided to throw them in one by one.
A man watching him asked him, “Why are you doing this? It doesn’t make a difference; there are so many of them.”
The boy replied, “It makes a difference to this one.”
I can’t save the world, but I can try to make a difference for the few whose paths cross mine. I teach self-defence, something people can see the results of immediately. Most people start off not being able to do much, and end up being able to do a lot. It’s a way to shift one’s perspective, through physical movement. To remember that your limiting beliefs can be challenged and overcome. When you’re equipped to handle tough situations, it gives you that confidence from within.
My hope is that this positivity compounds, and maybe they pay it forward in their own way someday. So even if what I do impacts just these few, I can make a difference – to them.
I’m okay with that.

WHAT IT IS
Empower yourself with self-defense techniques from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
WHAT WE'LL DO
I’ll welcome everyone in and make sure we’re comfortable. We’ll be going through 5 scenarios where you can defend yourself. For example, what to do if someone grabs you, or how to get out of a grip if you’re pinned to the wall or floor. Don’t worry, there won’t be any eye-gouging or ball-busting involved!
We’ll start with me giving a simple demo, where I break down the technique we’re going through. I also give you keywords that make it easier for you to think and act quickly on your feet.
Then, you’ll practise in pairs with each other. I walk you through it so you feel confident in your technique, and we practise it in a safe space with other professionals around to help.
After about 90 minutes of this, you’ll feel great about yourself and your newfound abilities. Most people start, thinking that they won’t be able to do it, but at the end of the experience, everyone is able to! It’s about shifting that perspective with physical movement.
I then provide frozen Acai bowls, and we can sit around the bar. I’ll share my story and relationship with martial arts with you, and we’ll explore how martial art philosophies can be applied to your life too. These 2 hours will be extremely empowering!
